Changing my thoughts around my body has been a work in progress for about 4 years now. I want to share some of the things that has really helped me in my journey.
Some questions to start thinking about this week:
Are your thoughts about your body mostly negative?
Are you putting off anything in your life until you lose weight?
Are you trying to lose weight for some upcoming event?
Imagine what life would be like if you didn’t spend so much time hating your body.
What else could you spend your time on?
Who else might be impacted by your body bashing?
I have two little girls and one of my reasons for working on body image is to help them navigate this for themselves and to model body acceptance. I also want to be fully present and enjoy my time with them instead of worrying about how my body looks.
The first tip is to observe those thoughts and notice how often they are showing up and how they impact your life. You can start my labeling those thoughts as “body bashing” and then you can put your attention elsewhere, like your surroundings in the present moment. Then the next step is to try some neutral thoughts out, like “this is my stomach today and other people have stomachs like this”. It’s very hard to go straight to body love when there’s been a lot of hate for so many years.
If you do have a daughter think about her standing next to you when you say those things to yourself.
